Melissa Joy Manning interviewed in Flashfilm.com, June 2008
Q1 What was your best experience in designing jewelry?

Recently I had the pleasure of custom designing an engagement ring for a young chef in San Francisco. He was a joy to work with- so thoughtful and purposeful in his choices. In the end he ended up selecting a gorgeous yellow and red diamond slice set in 18 karat red gold. His attention to detail and desire to choose something unique allowed me to create something truly special. After asking his fiancé to marry him he emailed me to thank me- telling me how much our joint design process had meant to him. Designing an heirloom ring that the couple will always treasure was a truly humbling and wonderful experience.

Melissa Joy Manning Jewelry-Oakland Magazine, June 2006

Growing up in Alameda, Oakland-based jewelry maker Melissa Joy Manning always had creative vision. She crafted her first piece (a ceramic bead necklace) in preschool and studied jewelry design at San Francisco State University, but was told she could never make a living in the arts. After trying numerous "traditional" jobs ("I took several waitressing jobs, but I kept getting fired"), Manning knew she was destined for something else.

No Sweat: Companies Bet on Living Wage-Xpress Magazine, June 2005

The din of jewelers' hammers pounding away on anvils competes with the sounds of Beck, The Shins, and Violent Femmes blaring from the radio. There are six work stations in the front half of this old firehouse in West Oakland. Five of seven artists in their twenties and thirties can be found at any given time laughing and talking as they work. At their stations, the artists cut and shave gold and silver. They polish druzy agate and other precious gems. They solder metal and wrap it around vintage tiger claws from the Himalayas. They place finished earrings and necklaces in tiny Ziploc bags.

Non-Western influence

by Melissa Joy Manning

I have always felt compelled to honor the histories of our ancestors. The tradition of tribal craft has forever inspired me. My original collection (designed in 1997) incorporated teeth and bone and was influenced by Non-Western Culture. It is said that when you take an animal you are to honor ALL parts of it. In using teeth, claws and fur, tribes were giving thanks to the spirit of an animal for giving its life for their survival. They also believed that wearing the relics of a killed animal imbued the spirit of the animal into the wearer- carrying its spirit into the future while simultaneously imbuing the aspects of that animal's spirit into the wearer.

Stone energy & settings

by Melissa Joy Manning

Stones hold an inherent value not only in monetary worth but in meaning. For example, Agates promote strength, Cavancite aids in intuition and Labradorite enhances faith. However, the elemental value of a stone is lost when it is not worn in direct contact with the skin. With this precept in mind, we have recently incorporated a dynamic opening within all of our designs so that the healing energy of our selected stones can benefit the wearer.

Interview with Art Effect

Each of the stones I use is unique. Unlike cut gems, no two are alike; it is the diversity of shape and originality of color that make each of the stones I use interesting, collectible and engaging. I am intrigued by the history of objects. Using metamorphic stones in my work, I am bringing nature to the wearer. Dreusies and Agates are formed in beautiful occurrences; they encapsulate the history of the earth's development- lightning storms, plate drifts, volcanic eruptions, even asteroid landings. It is this knowledge, that I am holding a piece of nature's history in my hands, which impels me to make jewelry of these stones.
