Too Precious to Wear encourages jewelry designers and consumers to celebrate the beauty of the ocean without harming it. Corals are among the most important animals in the sea, providing marine life with food, shelter, and areas for reproduction. Healthy corals are essential for sustainable and productive fisheries and are depended upon by millions of people around the globe for food and income.
Today, however, coral species worldwide are at risk; one-third are estimated to be threatened with extinction. Climate change, overfishing, destructive extraction methods, oil and gas exploration, invasive species, pollution, and ocean acidification all pose a risk to coral survival. And the removal of coral for use in jewelry and home décor only places additional, unneeded pressure on these valuable animals. By promoting alternatives to real coral, Too Precious to Wear hopes to help designers and consumers make educated decisions and create a climate for ocean conservation.
